Teen Given Seven Years For Drugs Offences
A teenager, described as a "pivotal cog" in the drugs trade, has been jailed for six years after being found guilty for possession of heroin.
It emerged in court that Keith McDermott, 19, of Boyne Street, Dublin 2, began drinking aged 14 before moving on to cannabis and cocaine, and accumulating a 'debt' to an inner city criminal gang.
He claimed he was forced into holding nearly €40,000 worth of cocaine to repay this debt.
However, the court heard that a mobile phone owned by McDermott contained two text messages with a list of people who got drugs and the money they "owed".
Judge O'Donnell termed the teen a "pivotal cod in the local drugs scene" before suspending the final three years of the sentence for three years on strict conditions. He noted McDermott’s probation report said he was at a low risk of reoffending but that he failed to admit he was a drug dealer.
Meanwhile, another 19-year-old has also been sentenced for drugs offences.
Jonathon Golding, of Marigold Crescent, Darndale was found in possession of heroin worth €43,000 in a car outside his mother's home.
He has been sentenced to seven years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court today.
Golding told gardaí he was holding the heroin for another person to pay off a drugs debt of around €2,000, which he'd accumulated from taking tablets and "skunk" everyday since his father died the previous year.
Golding pleaded guilty to possessing 219 grams of heroin found in a lunchbox under a seat of his car parked outside the premises on April 12, 2008.
