Garda Commisioner Offers Condolences Over PSNI Murder

Fachctna Murphy (pictured) has extended his condolences over the recent murder of a PSNI officer in Craigavon on Monday night.

Constable Stephen Carroll was part of a team called to deal with a distress call in the Lismore Manor area of Craigavon. He was shot while still in his vehicle by a waiting gunman. Disident Republican group, the Continuity IRA claimed responsibility for the attack.

Two men, aged 17 and 37, have since been arrested in connection with the murder.

Monday's shooting came on the heels of a shooting on Saturday when soldiers Mark Quinsey, 23, from Birmingham, and Patrick Azimkar, 21, from London, died in a volley of fire at Massereene Army base, Antrim. Another splinter group, the Real IRA, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Commissioner Murphy said: "The murders carried out in the last number of days in Northern Ireland represent a serious attack on the fundamentals of democracy itself and An Garda Siochana will do everything within its power to assist and co-operate with the Police Service of Northern Ireland to bring those responsible to justice."

People across Northern Ireland are expected to attend a series of rallies on Wednesday to show their anger at the murders.

Silent protests are to be held in Belfast, Lisburn, Newry, Downpatrick and Derry and a peace vigil is to be held in Craigavon, Co Armagh near the site where Constable Stephen Paul Carroll was shot.
