Stores Closing Early To Cut Costs
Following a slide in retail sales, many of Dublin's leading department stores are cutting their opening hours to reduce costs.
Both Clerys in O'Connell Street and Arnotts in Henry Street have announced they will be opening an hour later at 10am, while Arnott's has also cut back its Thursday late-night opening by an hour to 8pm.
The move follows revelations that last year saw the biggest fall in retail sales since 1982, with a drop of 4.5% in the volume of sales.
The figures from the Central Statistics Office also showed sales slumped by 8% for the final three months of 2008, compared with the same period the previous year.
Chief executive of Clerys PJ Timmins said new 10am opening time had been considered for some time.
Mr Timmins said the opening time reductions were being made in an attempt to keep down costs to avert cutting staff numbers.
Aebhric McGibney of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce said a number of city businesses are cutting costs by reducing opening hours, reducing working hours and pay cuts.
