Civil Servants Launch Lunchtime Protest
An estimated 13,000 civil servants are due to mount lunchtime protests at all Government offices today against the pension levy on public sector workers.
The action comes less than a month after the 150,000 strong protest in Dublin over the imposition of the controversial levy.
The Civil and Public Service Union (CPSU) said today's action won't cause too much disruption to the general public, but was a sign of solidarity against the Government's insistence to impose the charge and a reminder their campaign was still continuing.
According to a circular released by the Union: "The Strike Committee has decided to call a one hour lunchtime picket/protest as part of our campaign against the pay cuts introduced through the pension levy. This will take place between 1p.m. and 2p.m. on Thursday 19th March next."
CPSU General Secretary Blair Horan said the purpose of the action was to continue to bring to the attention of Government and the public generally "in a visible and effective way that CPSU members will not accept pay cuts".
The union is already operating a work to rule policy and its workers will today be picketting outside their own offices.
Also included in the circular where plans for another national day of strikes for the 30th of March is the Government does not meet the unon's demands.
Other Civil Service Unions have also been invited to participate with the CPSU's strike.
