Dublin Taxi Protests Disrupt Traffic
Two separate taxi protest are underway in the Irish capital, with traffic chaos expected to hit major routes in and around Dublin.
Thousands of union and non-union drivers are taking part in the demonstrations, one of which will last fours hours, having commenced at 7am.
The SITPU protest is taking place Dublin Airport.
A non-union lobby group, Taxi Drivers for Change, is taking its picket from Liffey Valley Shopping Centre and Airside Retail Park in to the city centre from 8am. The protesters are travelling in a convoy.
Taxi drivers have been enraged by the Goodbody consultants suggestion that a cap should bve placed on the issuing of new licences.
SIPTU said the report has no credibility in the industry and that another nationwide consultation with parties could take up to four months.
"This would take us well into the busiest season of the year," said spokesman Jerry Brennan.
Police have issued a warning to commuters: "This protest is likely to cause traffic delays and Garda are warning all persons travelling in the areas to be mindful when planning their journey.
"Passengers flying in and out of Dublin Airport on flights today should be particularly conscious of possible delays."
Gardaí also warned motorists that traffic congestion may be encountered during rush hour traffic in the vicinity of Fitzwilliam Square, O'Connell Street and arterial routes from Liffey Valley Shopping Centre and Airside Retail Park Swords to the city centre.
