Airports Disrupted By Strike action

A day of severe disruption is expected at Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports if the national day of action planned for a week from today goes ahead.

Union umbrella group ICTU have organised a national strike for 30 March, targeting employers and the Government.

One of Ireland's largest unions, SIPTU, is also joining the day of action, with its workers in the airports' fire, police and security services joining the protest.

The Unions are expected to serve notice of industrial action on behalf of thousands of workers today in protest at the failure of employers to comply with the national wage agreement.

The Irish Business and Employers Confederation's Director General Turlough O'Sullivan has written to the unions to call off the planned action describing it as "inappropriate".

In the letter, Mr O'Sullivan said: "IBEC is extremely concerned that the country is in a vacuum at present pending the forthcoming budget, and facing the possibility of disruptive and damaging' day of action' by trade unions on 30 March next."

The letter also expressed the view there could be another way forward, stating that IBEC is prepared to meet with ICTU at the earliest possible date to discuss the matter.
