Man Dies In Tallagh B&Q Accident

A major DIY store is at the centre of an investigation today after the accidental death of a man in the premises.

The incident was at the Tallaght branch of B&Q , and is being investigated by the Health and Safety Authority and the Gardaí.

The victim, who is in his late 50s, was killed when an item fell from a shelf at the DIY store at around 2.30pm yesterday afternoon.

The store is closed today while an investigation by officials from the HSA is carried out.

Gardaí have also confirmed that they are also involved in the investigation.

A B&Q statement said they are "working with the HSA and An Garda Síochána on a thorough investigation to understand how this tragic accident happened and our store will remain closed whilst this is under way".

This is not the first such incidence of accidents.

Last year, B&Q was ordered to pay out almost £50,000 for a "freak accident" at its Broadwater store in England which seriously injured one man and left three others needing medical attention.

Chichester Crown Court was told that B&Q had "failed in its duty of care" to customers and a paramedic who came to deal with the injured but was himself hurt by stock which fell from the top of shelving at the Lyons Farm superstore on June 5, 2004.

Back in June 2001, a pensioner died after an accident involving a forklift truck at one of the DIY superstores.

The 70-year-old woman was shopping in the B&Q store in Poole, Dorset, when she was seriously injured.

After she was taken to Poole Hospital, the victim was certified dead half an hour later.
