Mayor Welcomes Shannon To Heathrow Flights
The Mayor of Clare has described the recommencement of services between Shannon and London Heathrow as a "shot in the arm" for the West of Ireland economy.
Madeleine Taylor Quinn said the restoration of direct access to one of the world's most strategically important airports would restore confidence among multinationals based along the western seaboard.
"The international connectivity that this region can once again benefit from will have significant consequences for the future operations of companies throughout the Region," said the mayor.
"Furthermore, it will encourage potential investors and foreign multinationals to relocate here. The return of the Heathrow service comes at a time when the economy needs every support available to retain its competitiveness."
Mayor Taylor Quinn said that tourism would also benefit from the restored service.
Aer Lingus will now have a challenge to regain and restore the confidence of its previous customer base, according to the mayor.
"It must be recognised that a lot of damage has been done to the tourism and business community in Clare and the wider region since the withdrawal of the Shannon to Heathrow service last year.
"Shannon's rightful slots into Heathrow were wrongfully withdrawn in a cavalier and reckless fashion without any consideration of the fallout for the region," she said.
The mayor lauded the work of Shannon Airport's management team in pursuing the issue with Aer Lingus.
"Equally the Aer Lingus staff at Shannon must be praised for their co-operation on rationalisation, which undoubtedly was a factor in the airline reaching its decision to restore services," added the mayor.

Sextuplet Passes Away
One of Ireland's first sextuplets has died. It was revealed today that one of Nuala Conway's four girls - born along with two boys on 22 May - passed away at a local hospital in the North. Their publicist Max Clifford confirmed the news and said: "Our hearts go out to the mum and dad and we hope that the others are going to be fine," he said.

Protest Over Aer Lingus Shannon Move
Catholic and Church of Ireland bishops in the Republic have joined calls for Aer Lingus to reverse a decision to halt services from Shannon to Heathrow. A joint statement was being distributed at masses and services in Ireland's mid-west. It describes the plan to halt the service as very damaging.

A Fine Gael TD has described the extension of facilities to private aircraft at Shannon as a "great day" for the airport. Clare TD Joe Carey said the news of larger pre-clearance facilities to private aircraft at the airport was "a huge step forward" for the airport and the region as a whole.
