Injuries Plague Irish Soccer Underdogs

A number of Ireland's first team players will be out of action due to injury for the crucial world cup qualifier in Italy tonight.

Wolves' attacker Andy Keogh is set to start for the Republic of Ireland this evening, with Aiden McGeady out due to a knee injury.

Damien Duff's continued absence will be filed with Stephen Hunt on the left wing, while despite rumours of a comeback, Steven Ireland has still not returned to the squad.

Ireland are major underdogs going in to tonight's game against the world champions Italy in the city of Bari.

They are currently two points adrift of the Italians in Group Eight of the World Cup qualifiers after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Bulgaria at Croke Park on Saturday.

Paddy Power is currently offering 4-9 on Italy to win the game, with Ireland 15-2 outsiders, while there is a 100-1 shot on Ireland coming back to win after Italy leading at the end of the first half.

Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni admitted on Saturday his side let two World Cup points slip in the 1-1 qualifying draw at home to Bulgaria.

The Irish had led for most of the match before Bulgaria equalised through a Kevin Kilbane own goal.

"We could have scored a second goal and won the game," said Trapattoni.
