Government Criticises Fine Gael Budget Proposals

Fianna Fáil politicians have attacked Fine Gael's budget proposals, ahead of the Government's budget on Tuesday.

Junior Minister Billy Kelleher said Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny was being disingenuous claiming he could turn around the economy by 2012 without raising income taxes.

Meanwhile, Justice Minister Dermot Ahern said this morning Fine Gael's figures were "very fluffy" and failed to take account of the reality of the situation.

Mr Ahern was speaking as he prepared to enter a special cabinet meeting to sign off on the final details of tomorrow's emergency Budget.

The Cabinet is meeting this afternoon to put the final touches on tomorrow's emergency budget, which is expected to be the toughest in decades.

Exchequer returns published last week show that the Government will only raise about €34 billion in taxes this year. The overall cost of its spending programmes for 2009 will be €65 billion.

The budget is expected to contain a €3.5 billion package of tax and savings measures, with much of the money coming from extra tax.
