Decision On Fees Delayed Until After Elections
Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe is expected to delay his decision on the re-introduction of third-level fees until after the local elections on June 5.
Speaking at the annual conference of the Association of Secondary Teachers last night, Mr O'Keeffe said the Government would approach the matter in a fair manner.
He also said any fees introduced for college students would be at an affordable level.
The minister said he had presented a report on the issue to the cabinet, but no timeframe had been set for a final decision.
In other education news, Brian Hayes, Fine Gael's Education & Science spokesman yesterday welcomed Mr O'Keeffe's "U-turn" on prefabricated school accommodation. Speaking at the INTO conference in Letterkenny, Mr Hayes said the prefab rental costs of over €100,000, while 184 schools paying a further €50,000 was unacceptable, and was delighted Mr O'Keeffe had taken the decision.
"The Minister has now seen sense in the argument I have been making. This is an extraordinary admission given that he has allowed extortionate rents to be paid to these suppliers for far too long," said Mr Hayes.
