Gangland Figure Faces Jail On Sausage Roll Theft Charge

An alleged criminal who survived a machine gun attack on his life just days ago may be facing a jail sentence after he was caught stealing two sausage rolls worth less than €3.

Jimmy Collins, 46, of Hyde Avenue, Ballinacurra-Weston, Limerick, appeared in Limerick District Court on Wednesday where he admitted to the theft from Tesco at Roxboro Shopping Centre on March 3.

The two sausage rolls were worth €2.46.

Collins, an associate of the McCarthy-Dundon gang, narrowly escaped a gun attack on his home in the early hours of Monday morning.

Just 48 hours later he was appearing before Judge Tom O'Donnell, Collins on the theft charges.

Collins said he wanted his case heard in the district court rather than before a judge or jury and his solicitor submitted a plea of guilty on her client's behalf to the theft of the food items.

The court heard that the accused was observed on CCTV in the shopping centre.

In all, Collins has 33 previous convictions, including offences for possession of drugs and road traffic offences.

Collins had received a three-month suspended sentence from Judge Aeneas McCarthy for engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour. He was also bound to the peace for a period of two years or the sentence could be reactivated.

Judge O'Donnell yesterday noted that the theft occurred within the two-year period and adjourned the matter until May 6 to allow the court to make contact with Judge McCarthy on the issue of the suspended sentence.

The court heard that the theft of the sausage rolls occurred while the suspended sentence was "still live".
