Motor Cycle Collision Victim Named
The man fatally injured in a motorcycle collision on Saturday has been named by investigating Gardaí.
Sean Kelleher, 40, from Kilmichael, Macroom, Co Cork. Died as a result of his injuries sustained during a single vehicle incident, which occurred near Kilgarvan, Co Kerry, on Saturday.
He was being treated for his injuries at Cork University Hospital, where he passed away on Monday.
A total of 76 people have died on Ireland's roads so far this year, and Gardaí have launched a campaign to prevent further tragedies over the May Bank Holiday period.
In 2008, three people died in road traffic collisions over the May Hliday, and all road users are being urged to be attentive and enhance their own safety and that of other road users.
Over the coming weekend Garda resources will be deployed with the aim of increasing compliance amongst road users and improving road safety with particular focus on vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motor cyclists.
Accordin to Gardaí, the longer evenings mean greater use will be made of the road network and they have appealled to road users to pay particular attention to their own road safety and to wear high visibility clothing.
So far 12 pedestrians, eight motorcyclists, and two pedal cyclists have lost their lives on our road.
Gardaí are asking drivers to ensure they drive within the speed limits and appropriate to the road conditions. They are also asking drivers to drive with dipped headlights during daylight hours, to make sure fog lights are not inadvertently switched on when not required.
