Gardai Join European Deportation Operation
Some 25 foreign nationals have been deported from Ireland in a joint repatriation operation, Gardaí say.
The operation, which took place on Wednesday, involved the deportation of Nigerian nationals, from Ireland and from other participating States by chartered aircraft to their homeland.
The operation was carried out in conjunction with the European Union border security agency Frontex, with participating states along with Ireland including the United Kingdom, Spain, Luxembourg Slovakia and Malta.
The deportation took place from Ireland shortly after 10pm yesterday and involved 11 adult males, five adult females and nine children.
Following the departure from Ireland the flight went to Madrid where other persons from these countries boarded the flight.
According to Gardaí, the flight proceeded to Lagos where those deported disembarked awaiting their accompanying officers to return them to their home countries.
The operation was co-ordinated in Ireland by the Garda National Immigration Bureau and the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service.
A Gardaí escort accompanied the flight, while a spokesman said there were also medical personnel including a doctor and nurse on board.
