Aer Lingus Flyers Up 11%

Passenger numbers on Aer Lingus flights have soared by 11% in the last month compared to the same period last year, according to the airline.

Passenger numbers on short-haul flights were up 13%, but demand for long-haul flights was down 5.8%.

The news comes as the flag-carrier airline announced a new service allowing an online group-booking facility with customers now able to book up to 25 seats online at any one time.

The service is expected to boost custom for long-haul flights from the airline. A total of 945,000 passengers used Aer Lingus during April.

This latest news comes five months after the airline announced it would scrap controversial fuel charges, meaning customers saved hundreds on euro on long-haul flights.

Ryanair on the other hand has found itself embroiled in legal battle with its workers at Carcassonne Airport in France.

The budget air service is seeking damages as a result of what it calls "unlawful wildcat strikes" by CGT union members employed at check-in, security and refuelling.

The airline claims the strikes closed Carcassonne Airport without warning for three days from 25th - 27th May disrupting travel plans of 4,000 Ryanair passengers including 440 passengers who had their flights cancelled as a direct result.

However, the union has described Ryanair's withholding of a 3% pay increase, which resulted in the strikes, as "scandalous and discriminatory".
