Bridge Fails To Navigate Troubled Water
Bad weather has held back plans to bring the Samuel Beckett Bridge on the latest stage of its journey.
The advanced Bridge, which will span the Liffey will now be delayed after an abandoned attempt to ferry the Bridge to its mount at 2am this morning because of high winds.
A fresh attempt will be made at high tide tomorrow morning.
The River Liffey's new bridge was due to be in place this week after its week-long journey from the Netherlands.
The new bridge, which is due to be operational next year will link from Guild Street on the north quays to Sir John Rogerson's Quay on the south.
Costing €59 million, the bridge will be capable of rotating on its axis for maritime traffic and has four traffic lanes, cycle tracks and footpaths.
The 120-metre Samuel Beckett Bridge was designed by Dr Santiago Calatrava Valls and constructed in the Netherlands. It is a cable-stayed steel box girder design, spanning 120-metres between the north and south quay walls.
The bridge has four traffic lanes, cycle tracks and footpaths and will be able to rotate 90 degrees to facilitate maritime traffic.
The Department of the Environment, Dublin Docklands Development Authority and Dublin city council funded the bridge, which was constructed by Graham Hollandia.
