Fire Destroys Three Boats Near Yacht Club

A fire near the Royal Irish Yacht Club in Dún Laoghaire has destroyed three yachts. No one was on board any of the vessels, two of which sank. The Dublin Fire Brigade was contacted shortly before midnight and was at at the scene at the marina until morning. A technical examination is being carried out by gardaí on the third damaged boat this morning.

Stag Party Guest Drowns After Falling From Boat

It has emerged that a man died after falling from boat during a stag party river cruise. Longford man Sean Kelly ,26, was boating on the River Erne with friends when he fell overboard on 1st May. It is believed he drowned after suffering a head injury as he plunged into the waters. Mr Kelly was buried last week.

Dublin Woman's Sight Restored After 46 Years

A Dublin Woman has been given back her sight after being blind for 46 years. Jenny O'Connell from Dún Laoghaire in Dublin lost her sight at the age of 11 due to a bad reaction to a medicine and had never seen her husband or children until today. The treatment, known as Boston Keratoprosthesis, began over four weeks ago following a rare procedure to insert an artificial cornea.

Body Found In Search For Missing Fisherman
Rescuers searching for a fisherman missing off the coast of Cork have recovered a body. A search operation was launched at first light today (Tuesday) after the fisherman failed to return from a trip on Monday night. The search in an area south of Schull involved local rescue boats, the LÉ Orla, and a Coast Guard helicopter.

Children Rescued By Sligo Coastguard
A group of children, aged between nine and 12, have been rescued by the Sligo Coastguard after their boats were caught in a swell this afternoon. The children, who were on a sailing course in Sligo Bay, were in five sailing dinghies at the time. Two of the boats overturned, however one of the boats made it to shore.

Around 75 fishing boats are to be decommissioned in Ireland is the Minister for Agriculture Mary Coughlan newly launched scheme is successful. She aims to permanently remove certain types of fishing vessels from the Irish fleet.

Fuel Costs Crippling Fishing Industry
The Government is being lobbied to follow the French example and move to help Irish fishermen meet escalating fuel costs. The fishermen's federation has highlighted the serious problems members are facing, leaving many boats finding it difficult to even stay at sea. The French government has already taken action to help its fishing industry.

Water Users To Help Limit Spread Of Crayfish Plague
Water users are being urged to take precautions to help limit an outbreak of Crayfish plague on River Suir, downstream of Clonmel to Carrick-on-Suir. It comes after large numbers of dead freshwater crayfish were reported on the river earlier this month. DNA analysis has now confirmed that the cause of death was crayfish plague.
