Ireland To Miss Aid Target
Ireland looks set to 'undershoot' its international aid target for 2010, according to a report released on Thursday.
Aidwatch 2009, a lobbying and campaigning initiative, which monitors EU governments spending on aid, said Ireland will almost certainly miss its commitment to spend 0.6% national income on overseas aid by 2010.
A spokesman for Aidwatch said: "Failure to meet aid targets across Europe is expected to deprive developing countries of €39bn between 2006-10 – enough to pay the salaries of more than three million trained nurses for four years."
The report said Ireland, along with Italy and Latvia, have slashed their aid budgets in recent months. Aidwatch also warned that many EU countries are “artificially” inflating overseas aid figures.
Aid value 'inflation' is done by including debt cancellation as part of the total pledge, even though it is not 'new money' coming into needy countries for development aid.
The report shows that just a handful of EU countries remain on track to meet the 2010 aid target - helping offset a pledges shortfall elsewhere amounting to €40 billion between 2006-2010.

Ireland Must Recover €13bn In 'Illegal Aid' From Apple
Ireland granted Apple "undue tax benefits of up to €13 billion", according to a new ruling by the European Commission (EC). The EC launched an in-depth state aid investigation in June 2014, which has now ruled that two tax rulings issued by Ireland to Apple substantially and artificially lowered the tax paid by Apple in Ireland since 1991.
