Public Hearing Into Revised Corrib Route Gets Underway

A public hearing into a revised onshore pipeline route for the contentious Corrib gas project in north Mayo began today.

The hearing, held by An Bord Pleanála, began in Belmullet on Tuesday morning. It is being heard under the Strategic Infrastructure Act and is expected to last for several weeks.

The hearing will be open to objections from local residents and environmentalists, with statutory bodies such as the Environmental Protection Agency also being represented, and up to 80 submissions are expected to be heard over the next few weeks.

Shell is seeking permission to lay a pipeline which would connect to an offshore line to transport gas to the Corrib refinery in Bellanaboy.

The original route was exempted from planning approval under the Gas Acts in 2002, but three years later, locals raised objections when work began.
