Galway Scientists Discover Coral Reefs
Researchers from the National University of Ireland (NUI) in Galway have discovered a major new area of deepwater coral reefs off the west coast.
The area extends to 200sqkm of the seabed on the southern end of the Porcupine Bank. It contains 40 coral underwater hills, some rising to a 100m high.
Dr Anthony Grehan, who is a the Chief Scientist of the team from the earth and ocean sciences section of NUI Galway, said that the team was amazed for having encountered these spectacular examples of coldwater reefs in Irish waters.
He also said the area should be protected, as scientists believe that it could benefit fish stocks by providing habitats.
According to Dr Grehan, medical research could profit too, as the deepwater coral reefs represent one of the last untapped reservoirs of biocompounds that can be used in pharmaceuticals.
