Dunlop Sentenced In Corruption Case
A former government press secretary and lobbyist Frank Dunlop has been sentenced to 18 months in prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to bribing politicians in the 1990s.
He was handed down the term on corruption charges at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Dunlop, 62, pleaded guilty to five charges of corruption.
Working as Fianna Fail's Press Secretary from 1977 to 1982, Dunlop admitted handing over money to politicians in and around the time of crucial rezoning votes at council meetings relating to lands at Carrickmines in Dublin.
Dunlop's legal team said a jail sentence would be an unnecessary punishment at a sentencing hearing last week.
The Criminal Assets Bureau admitted he was a crucial witness in its investigation, with a spokesman at the bureau saying Dunlop himself supplied the only evidence of the former lobbyist's wrongdoing.
According to his legal team, Dunlop has already paid 'an enormous price' for his bribing of Dublin County Councillors.
On the day of his arrest, Dunlop told his arresting officers: "We always knew this day was coming and I will not be contesting the charges."
His former barrister, Colm Allen, said he has "no life and is a social pariah". He could however have been jailed for up to seven years or face a fine of up to €50,000.
