Man Arrested During Firearms Seizure In Portlaoise

A man has been arrested after a number of firearms were seized in Co Laoise.

Gardai arrested the 27-year-old man and seized a number of firearms in a planned operation along the M7 motorway outside Portlaoise on Thursday at about 3pm.

As part of the planned operation, officers from the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation stopped and searched a car on the motorway.

During the course of the search six firearms, including two rifles and four shotguns were discovered. Gardaí say investigations are ongoing to establish the origins of the firearms.

The driver was the only occupant of the car. He was arrested at the scene and taken to Portlaoise Garda station where he is detained under the Offences Against the State Act. He may be detained for up to 72 hours.

Men Sought Over Attempted Armed Bank Robbery
Gardaí have appealed for information about an attempted armed robbery of a bank in Dunboyne, Co Meath on Tuesday morning. It is understood that two masked men, believed to have been carrying firearms, entered a Bank of Ireland branch through its roof shortly after 9am. They threatened staff and demanded a safe inside the bank to be opened.

Dublin Man Charged As 60 Guns Found In Car
An Irishman has been charged with illegally importing firearms after 60 guns were discovered concealed in a car in the UK. The find is believed to be the largest seizure of lethal purpose weapons at a UK port, according to the National Crime Agency (NCA).

Man Claims He Found Rifle 'In A Field'
A 23-year-old man has been jailed for two years after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm, which he claimed he found in a field. It is understood the man claimed he found the firearm, believed to be a rifle, "when he cycled over it in a field", before he took it home and put it inside a wall of his home.
