Ex-TDs Group Given Almost €200,000 Of Taxpayers Money
A society set up for former TDs and senators to safeguard their pension rights and entitlements has received just under €200,000 of tax-payers money, it has been revealed.
The Irish Parliamentary Society, which provides support and assistance to former members of the House, as well maintaining links between past and present parliamentarians, has been given a total of €192,500 grants over the last four years.
The news has emerged after documents were released to RTÉ News under the Freedom of Information Act.
The exclusive club, containing former members of the Oireachtas and ex-MEPs was founded in 1998. In 2003 it was reported the former Taoiseach, Bertie O'Hern, had hosted a reception for members in the Irish Parliamentary Society at Leinster House, at a cost to the taxpayer of €1,466.
No grants were paid to the society in 2009 because the money in its accounts exceeded its financial needs for a year's work.
The society is also financed through annual subscriptions from members and is part of the European Association of Former Parliamentarians.
