Kenny Says General Election Coming
Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny has said he is almost certain that a general election will follow this week's local and European elections.
Speaking in Cork today, Mr Kenny said he was certain Fianna Fail and the Greens would be defeated in the local elections and would lose one of their European Parliament seats.
He said Fianna Fail was afraid to call a general election because voters have completely lost confidence in the party.
In a statement released on Monday, Mr Kenny said the elections on June 5th offered a choice between Fine Gael's plans to create and protect jobs and Fianna Fáil’s tax levies that are, "in effect, being poured in to prop up Anglo Irish Bank".
"Just this week with the further bail out of Anglo Irish Bank we can all now see where the extra taxes are going.
"It is like Robin Hood in reverse, this Government is taking from the poor to prop up their rich banker and developer friends," he said.
Meanwhile, Fianna Fail Bye-election candidate in Dublin South, Shay Brennan, has called on Fine Gael's National Director of Elections Frank Flannery to either step down or withdraw his support for a Fine Gael-Sinn Fein coalition government.
"Voters in Dublin South are horrified by the prospect that Fine Gael would consider working with an anti-business and anti-European party like Sinn Féin," said Mr Brennan.
The local and Irish European Parliamentary elections take place on Friday.
