Taoiseach To Meet Reformatory Victims Groups
Groups representing former residents of Ireland's religious reformatories are to meet with Taoiseach Brian Cowen.
Among the groups expected to attend are members of Right of Place, Right to Peace, Alliance Victims' Support, SOCA UK, SOCA Ireland, Aislinn, Survivors of Institutional Abuse (SOIA) and the Irish Survivors of Institutions, International groups.
Representatives from 18 congregations which ran the institutions are also due to meet with Mr Cowen tomorrow.
The meetings follow the publication of the Ryan report two weeks ago, which revealed details of systematic abuse in the religious institutions at the hands of clerical and lay staff over a period of decades.
The groups have been coming under increasing pressure to stump up yet more compensation for victims of the abuse, the details of which has caused outrage among the public and the government.
Minister for Education Batt O'Keeffe said yesterday the Government is to seek "a substantial increase" in compensation from the religious orders.
The meeting will take place at 6pm, and will begin after "a silent march of solidarity" with former residents of the institutions in Dublin at noon marching from Parnell Square to the Dáil. Wreaths will be laid 'in memory of the living and dead' of the institutions.
