Irish Woman Dies From Spiked Indonesian Cocktail

An Irish woman has died in Indonesia after drinking contaminated alcohol, part of a 'rogue' batch, in Indonesia.

The death brings the total number killed by the lethal batch of Indonesian palm wine 'Arack' to 23.

Ms Craig, 25, from Drogheda, Co Louth, died along with her Dutch partner while holidaying on an islet off the island of Lombok.

The batch is thought to be spiked with methanol and many of the victims have also been tourists.

Alan Cole, 59, died in a separate incident on Saturday having consumed the traditional palm wine.

Mr Cole is believed to have been the first foreign victim of the poisoning. His Indonesian wife found him unconscious at their home in Canggu in Bali after he drank arrak bought from a local stall, according to the Jakarta Post.

He had suffered a seizure and his vision was affected by the time they reached a hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

An American woman, Rose Johnson, 48, who lived in the beach village of Sanur, died in the early hours of Monday morning after being admitted to hospital unconscious after she also consumed "arak".

The Indonesian authorities have responded to the poisonings by cracking down on home distillers.

Meanwhile, police have arrested a local man suspected of concocting the lethal batch. Spiking the drink with methanol - which is used in rural areas to fuel pump lanterns.

An Indonesian police spokesman, said: "He is suspected of producing and selling alcohol containing methanol . . . which can cause death. We're investigating whether he did it on purpose."
