Soldier Injured In Training Exercise
A young soldier has been seriously injured during a training exercise accident in Co Cork.
The officer was acting as a supervisor in a night firing exercise when he received blast injuries at approximately 11.30pm.
Army paramedics were on the scene at Kilworth and he was removed to hospital within minutes of the accident.
He has been taken to Cork University Hospital where his condition is described as critical but stable. His family and next of kin have been informed and are at the hospital
The lieutenant, who is based at Collins Barracks in Cork, is expected to undergo surgery this morning.
A Defence Forces spokesman said: "The scene of the accident has been preserved and a Military Police investigation is getting under way today."
The officer is based in Collins Barracks, Cork and was working as part of a team of supervisors for a night exercise on Kilworth range. No other injuries were reported.

Man Attacked In East Cork
Gardaí are appealing for information after a man in his 40s was attacked in east Cork on Tuesday. The victim was assaulted at Meat Shambles Lane in Youhal at around 3pm. He is currently being treated at Cork University Hospital, however his injures are not believed to be life-threatening. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them.

It is understood the men were working at Shannon Industrial Estate, Co Clare, when the incident happened at about 15:30 on Thursday afternoon. The men remain in hospital, where they are being treated for "serious burn injuries".

Deaths Of Father And Daughter A 'Tragic Accident'
Gardai have reported that they are treating the deaths of a father and daughter as a 'tragic accident'. Their bodies were recovered from the sea in west Cork close to their home, following an extensive search on Wednesday. They have been named as Martin McCarthy, 50, of Foilnamuck and his three-year-old daughter Clarissa.

Inquest Opens Into 2011 Cork Airport Crash
An inquest has opened into a plane crash at Cork Airport that killed six people in 2011. The crash happened on the 10 February when a 19-seater Metroliner aircraft crashed at Cork Airport on its third attempt to land in dense fog. The flight had arrived from Belfast and was carrying 10 passengers and 2 crew.
