Taxi Men Stop Work In Protest
Taxi drivers in Dublin stopped work on Thursday morning in protest at a decision to raise the cost of the taxi licence fee.
The four main taxi drivers unions have all advised their members not to work between the hours of 7am and 11am.
During the stoppage a petition will be delivered to the office of the Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey, calling for the resignation of the Taxi Regulator, Kathleen Doyle.
The organisation says it has been left with "no other option" than to publicly protest their position and withdraw their labour.
Taxi drivers are furious after the cost of a five-year Public Service Vehicle licence rose by €3 to €250 last month.
Last week the JTC said the decision to increase the fee was "the latest example of the draconian decisions being imposed upon the industry without consultation".
Pressure group Taxi Drivers for change will also be arriving at the department of Transport at 3.30pm next Tuesday to deliver their submission document "change for the better" to Minister Noel Dempsey.
The group says the document addresses the problems that taxi drivers are experiencing nationally.
A spokesman for the group said the document has been widely consulted throughout the taxi driving community of Ireland and that all the proposals have been put forward by taxi drivers for the betterment of both the industry itself and the national public safety interest.
Spokesman for Taxi Drivers For Change Frank Byrne said: "These are well thought out and positive ideas put forward by the taxi drivers of Ireland and deserve to be considered seriously, we hope Mr Dempsey understands this and gives change for the better due consideration".
