90 jobs lost at Corden PharmaChem
Some 90 jobs will be lost as Corden PharmaChem phases out manufacturing at its plant in Little Island, Cork, from autumn of this year.
The pharmaceutical company, will however keep its research and development activity in Cork.
A spokesman for the company said the decision was reached after a comprehensive review and analysis of its operations showed the scale of investment needed in the plant meant the operation in Cork was no longer viable.
The company provides a range of services including process development, analytical development, process scale-up, safety assessments and optimisation.
The Little Island plant employs 97 people and has operated in Cork under different ownership since 1976.
A consultation process will begin next week with staff representatives and existing customers on the phasing of the closure.
Meanwhile, it has been revealed over 130 warehousing and distribution jobs at Coca-Cola in Dublin, Tuam, Tipperary, Killarney, Cork and Waterford are being considered for the chop.
SIPTU Branch Organiser John Dunne says the Union will seek to maintain the jobs for its members.
Mr Dunne welcomed the company's commitment that no final decision would be taken before it had consulted with the unions representing the workforce.
He said: "Our priority, as always, will be to maintain as many jobs as possible." Referring to the high costs cited by Coca-Cola as a reason for considering the move, he added that, "Nothing has been decided yet and we have been able to address competitiveness issues successfully in the past".
The company cited high costs as one reason for deciding to outsource its activity.
