European Election Results Finalised
The final seats have been filled in the European Elections after a close contest in the North West.
The two governing parties of Fianna Fail and the Greens again polled badly, as they did in the local elections.
The contest for the three North West seats became a tightly run race with only 1,487 separating the three winning candidates.
Independent MEP Marian Harkin topped the poll in the North West region in the early hours of this morning with 121,672 votes.
Former MEP and Minister of State Pat 'The Cope' Gallagher, currently a Fianna Fáil TD, came in second with 120,930, while current Fine Gael MEP Jim Higgins ended up in third place with 120,185.
Overall, Fine Gael pulled in the highest tally of votes with 29.1%, Fianna Fail took 24.1%, and Labour finished third overall with 13.9%.
Controversial anti-Lisbon Treaty party Libertas failed to win any seats in Brussels, but said it was proud of what it had achieved.
Party leader Declan Ganley said: "We took on the enormous challenge of being the first pan-European party and succeeded in fielding over 500 candidates and creating a people's movement across Europe.
"While we are disappointed with the overall results across Europe, our message remains relevant and important and we urge all newly elected Members of the European Parliament to take action in reforming Brussels."
