Over 400 At Risk At Lufthansa Technik

Unions and management at Lufthansa Technik Airmotive are to meet as fears grow for the future of over 400 jobs at the company.

Management at the aircraft engine maintenance plant in Rathcoole have warned workers will be put on protective notice from Monday unless they adopt new work practices.

Earlier this year, workers voted to accept proposals to secure a €28.5m investment in the plant but managers are claiming employees are failing to honour the agreement and some staff are refusing to do overtime, which has led to work being turned away.

Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mary Coughlan has expressed concern about the situation and urged the workers to seriously consider their actions.

Meanwhile, SIPTU has served strike notice for another official one day strike on the Cape Clear Ferry, Naomh Ciaran II, for June 18.

The last strike was on June 4 over an ongoing dispute after the Ferry's owner, Ciaran O'Driscoll, laid off the Master, reduce crew pay by between 22% and 27% and make them work four weeks unpaid this summer, claimed the union.

Last Friday night Mr O'Driscoll issued written warnings to two crew members for unofficial action on the June bank holiday Monday when they refused to operate the ferry.

SIPTU Branch Organiser Eddie Mullins said: "The irony is that Mr O'Driscoll has recognised my right to represent members at the disciplinary hearing but he still refuses to meet with me and discuss the substantive issues which gave rise to the industrial action, official and unofficial in the first place. This dispute will have to be solved by negotiation eventually."
