Ganley Denies Owing Campaigner €350,000

A 28-year-old Dutch Libertas campaigner has revealed the parties Irish leader Declan Ganley is yet to pay a €350,000 campaign bill.

Eline van den Broek, a political scientist who led anti-Lisbon Treaty party Libertas in the Netherlands, has revealed she has €350,000 in bills in Declan Ganley's name, saying she was not personally responsible for them.

Ms van den Broek said she had travelled to Ireland to visit the Libertas leader who had told her, she claims, he would pay her the money.

However, in a statement last night a Libertas spokesman said at no stage was any candidate "promised" money.

In the elections Libertas won just 14,000 votes in the Netherlands and did not come close to taking a seat. Mr Ganley also failed to take a seat in Ireland, and this week announced he would be stepping out of politics after failing to secure a mandate.

Dutch newspaper Volkskrant reported yesterday Libertas Spain was considering taking legal action after only receiving a fraction of the €4 million it said it had been promised by Mr Ganley.

Following the announcement of the party's defeat, Mr Ganley said he was proud of what the supporters, volunteers and candidates have achieved in just a short few months.

"We took on the enormous challenge of being the first pan-European party and succeeded in fielding over 500 candidates and creating a people's movement across Europe."
