Concern Over Rise In HIV Infections
An Aids campaign group have expressed "major concern" over the figures showing an increase in the incidence of AIDS contraction.
The Dublin AIDS Alliance described the 3.6% rise of HIV infections across Ireland as a major concern.
New figures show a total of 405 new HIV diagnoses reported to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre last year. The total number of HIV infections in Ireland reported to the end of December 2008 was 5,243.
Heterosexuals accounted for the majority of the new cases followed by gay men and injecting drug users.
Meanwhile on Friday, a new forum was launched by the HSE at Dublin Castle attended by Minister Áine Brady.
The All Ireland Gay Health Forum is designed to reflect the struggle, development and survival of those working in the area of HIV and AIDs Services.
The Forum will identify key health priorities of gay men as evidenced in Irish and international research.
It will also identify the approaches in addressing the health related needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community across the HSE.
The HSE's Gay Men's Health Service (GMHS) is the only statutory gay health service in the Republic of Ireland, signifying the developments in services for gay men and the commitment that exists across the health arena to support and develop services.
Executive Director of the Dublin AIDS Alliance Mary O'Shea said investment in HIV and sexual health prevention strategies need to be a priority for the Government.
