Irish M&S Stores Drop Prices

Marks & Spencer has announced a permanent cut in the price of clothing and homeware at its Irish stores.

Jonathan Smith, who is in charge of the London-based company's Irish business, said that the decision aims to help costumers to face up to the current tougher economic conditions.

M&S will reduce clothing prices around a 10%, and will cut the furniture and homeware prices up to 12% on average at outlets.

The company - that is due to open its 20th Irish store in Co Tipperary next week - employs 3,500 workers, and will apply the lower prices from tomorrow.

The move is widely seen to be in response to the continuing stream of shoppers flooding across the border to spend their euros in NI, targeting Newry and Derry as well as travelling as far away as Belfast to shop.

Cross-border shopping totalled between €210m and €240m in 2007.

However, a weaker euro is this week promising to at least slow down the previously accelerating flood of north-bound shoppers.
