Garda Road Death Case Reaches Court
The 18-year-old man charged with the manslaughter of a garda in Co Donegal in March after an incident involving a car has been bailed.
Jamie McGrenaghan of Gortnacraw, Kerrykeel in Co Donegal was charged at Glenties District Court in Co Donegal with the unlawful killing of Garda Robert McCallion.
Garda McCallion was knocked down and seriously injured while investigating reports of a stolen car in Letterkenny on 26 March.
The policeman died in hospital on the 7th April from his injuries.
At the time, Gardaí Commissioner Fachtna Murphy - speaking at a police conference in Athlone - expressed his deep regret and sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Garda McCallion.
A book of condolence for Garda McCallion was also opened at Letterkenny Garda Station, where he was stationed, such was the public shock over the incident.
Today in court, McGrenaghan was also charged with dangerous driving causing Garda McCallion's death on the same occasion and with reckless driving and endangering the lives of Garda Joanne Doherty and Garda Shane Lavelle.
He was remanded on bail.

Justice And Equality Budget To Increase By €85m
The budget for the Justice and Equality sector is to be increased by €85 million, totalling €2.54 billion in 2017. Funding has been provided for the recruitment of 800 Garda recruits in 2017 and up to 500 civilians to support the wide ranging reform plan in train in An Garda Síochána. A total of €71.

Taoiseach Makes Garda Commitments Following O'Higgins Report Publication
The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has committed to increase garda numbers to 15,000, double the number of garda reserve officers and increase the number of civilian workers in An Garda Síochána to free up officers for frontline policing. The Taoiseach made his comments in a statement addressing the newly published O'Higgins Commission Report.
