Proposed Sligo Road Schemes In Focus
It has emerged today that fresh concerns are being expresses over the proposed western by-pass of Sligo town.
Ahead of a second public consultation, residents in the Strandhill Road Cumeen area have voiced their fears over the route which aims to run from Carroroe to link up with the N15 Bundoran and the N16 Manorhamilton roads.
A campaign committee spokesperson said that the route will pass through a number of residential areas and will impact on Woodville House and Farm and a number of protected areas.
As a result, they are appealing to Sligo County Council to withdraw the proposal - even though it is not planned to get underway for at least 15 years.
Chairman of the Cummeen Strandhill Road Residents Committee, Jim Beirne told the Ocean FM radio station that the by-pass will have a detrimental effect on the area.
Meanwhile, in related news An Bord Pleanala has granted planning permission for the previously controversial Eastern Garavogue Bridge in Sligo.
The route is planned to link the Calry and Carroroe areas of the town and pass through the residential areas of Garavogue Villas, Martin Savage Terrace and Doorley Park.
There has been uproar over the plans for the bridge and campaigners have lobbied tirelessly against it.
The campaign committee took a High Court case against Bord Pleanala and in a landmark decision won their appeal late last year over noise issues associated with the developments.
Now, the surprise 'green light' granted by the planning authorities is said to be "devastating for all residents affected".
