Irish Doctor's Body Identified As Air Crash Victim

The remains of an Irish doctor have finally been positively identified after being recovered from the debris of the tragic Air France flight AF447 crash last month.

Dr Jane Deasy, 27, who worked in Dublin, was positively identified today.

Dr Deasy, was returning from a holiday with two friends, Dr Eithne Walls, 28, from Ballygowan, Co Down, and Dr Aisling Butler, 26, of Roscrea, Co Tipperary, when their flight is believed to have broken up over the Atlantic on 1 June.

All 228 passengers and crew on the Airbus A330 en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris were killed.

The news comes as it emerged Brazil has called off the hunt for bodies and wreckage from the flight that plunged into the Atlantic earlier this month.

However, the search for the 'black boxes' that might explain what happened is expected to continue.

Only 51 bodies had been recovered from the Atlantic waters.

An Irish Embassy official in Recife is liaising with the Brazilian authorities with regard to the repatriation of Dr Deasy's remains.

Investigators are to present their first report into the disaster on Thursday but although it is expected to be an inconclusive report due to the still missing flight recorders.

Brazil's navy suspended the search for bodies on Friday after nine days without success.

Of 51 bodies recovered, 11 have been identified, including the French pilot, a Brazilian steward and one Briton.

In other news, a 14-year-old girl is the only confirmed survivor of a plane crash in the Indian Ocean after being plucked from the ocean yesterday.

The girl - who was brought to shore this morning - is the only passenger among the 11 crew and 142 passengers on Flight IY 626 to be left alive, according to Yemeni Transport Minister Khaled al-Wazir.

Officials said the plane hit bad weather as it came in to make a landing approach and crashed into rough seas having disappeared from control tower radar screens at 1.51am local time.

It is not believed that any Irish citizens were aboard the flight.
