Man Dies In Weekend Gun Attack
A father of two has been shot dead in Dublin after trying to protect his neighbour.
The deceased, Wayne Doherty, a 32-year-old father of two, was shot in the upper body at 11.30pm on Saturday outside his parents’ home at Oakview Way, Hartstown, west Dublin. Mr Doherty’s brother and sister witnessed the attack.
It is believed the incident took place following a row in a Dublin pub earlier that day. Detectives said the men involved in the row went in two cars to Oakview Way with the intention of attacking another man involved in the bar scuffles.
A number of other local people gathered on the street after receiving information that the attackers were on their way to shoot the local man and they had gathered as a group to try to protect their neighbour.
Mr Dogherty was then believed to have approached the attackers cars when they arrived, knowing some the men. One man got out of the car and shot Mr Dogherrty twice in the upperbody with a shotgun.
Mr Doherty was taken by ambulance to Connolly hospital, Blanchardstown, where he died just after 5.30am yesterday.
The scene of the shooting was sealed off and underwent an examination by members of the Garda Technical Bureau. Mr Doherty, with an address at Beachwood Close, Blanchardstown, was not known to gardaí.
