Electricians Strike Talks Shut Down Over Night
Talks between both sides in the electricians' dispute shut down last night without agreement.
Electricians union representatives and their employers however are to reconvene at the Labour Relations Commission at 11am this morning after after 14 hours of discussions yesterday.
The LRC says that at present the position of both parties on the issue of pay makes an agreement currently impossible, that a reasonable level of compromise is essential to end the dispute.
Electricians are seeking an 11% pay increase, which has been due for a number of years while employers are pressuring for a 10% pay cut.
Over 10,000 electricians - who are members of the Technical Engineering and Electrical Union - yesterday stopped or disrupted work at many sites around the country.
The union described the strike as 'a major success', saying they had had significant support from workers in other unions.
Among the sites picketed were the Pfizer plant at Little island, the new Glaxo Smith Kline building in Ringaskiddy, the Douglas Shopping Centre, and Cork University Hospital site.
According to reports this morning, about half of the workforce is reporting for work and passing the pickets. The remaining workers are supporting the dispute.
