Irish Swine Flu Cases Increase By 500 Per Day
It emerged yesterday that another swine flu sufferer is now gravely ill in the Republic of Ireland, making a total of two patients now 'critical' due to the virus.
The State's health chiefs are now warning people with underlying medical problems that they remain at risk and also said that some 276 cases have been confirmed in Ireland.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said they now expect deaths from the disease in the coming weeks and months.
As well as the two being treated in intensive care, another 10 flu victims also remain in hospital with the illness.
On average, swine flu cases in Ireland are growing at the rate of 500 cases a day, according to the Department of Health.
The figure emerged from weekly reports by 50 GP practices around the country as part of the national influenza monitoring network.
The news comes as the global death toll from swine flu has reached 1,000 as the H1N1 virus sweeps around the world.
On Tuesday it was reported that the first man - who is in his 30s - was critically ill in St James's Hospital in Dublin suffering from the swine influenza.
The man, who is originally from Bratislava in Slovakia, was admitted to hospital late last week, and it is believed he contracted the virus while abroad.
The hospital said that the man, who has been working in Ireland for several years, is in a critical condition.
A spokesman for the hospital said all necessary precautions were being taken and that the Health Service Executive and the Department of Health are fully informed.
There are as yet no further details on the second critically ill patient.
