'U-Turn' On Military Cadetships
There will be 42 defence forces' cadetships offered later this year, despite previous cut-backs. The Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea announced that cadetship competitions for both the Army and Naval Service will be held. This decision comes after detailed discussions between the Minister for Defence and the Minister for Finance. Minister O'Dea secured Government approval for the move this week. Cadet recruitment had been suspended, because of the economy, but today the Minister said: "I am extremely pleased to be able to make this significant announcement. It follows lengthy discussions between myself and the Minister for Finance in this regard and it is a significant achievement in light of the current economic realities. Thirty army and twelve naval cadetships will be awarded."
'Massed' Protests In Donegal
There has been opposition to the erection of an Eircom mast in Ramelton. Donegal North-East Deputy Joe McHugh met with Eircom's Director of Regulatory Affairs after concerns were expressed by local residents that centre on the fact that the mast would be erected in close proximity to a local school and residential areas. Protests are to be taken directly to the group that plans to erect the mast, Tetra. It has been commissioned by the government to erect the digital-based radio mast at Ramelton. Tetra is an umbrella group representing the Eircom, Motorola, and Sygma companies.
Whales In Danger
Fears were growing this afternoon for the safety of 10 pilot whales which had become stuck in shallow water off the coast of Co Kerry. A number of boats arrived in the area early today to try and redirect the whales into deeper water. There were fears the animals could die if not returned to their natural habitat.
View Of Migrants Getting Worse
The Immigrant Council of Ireland says Irish people's attitudes towards migrant workers are becoming increasingly negative as a result of the economic downturn. The council says many people are blaming immigrants as the number of people signing on the Live Register continues to rise and it said leadership must be shown by the Government, NGOs and businesses to tackle negative perceptions of immigrants.
