Irish Teachers To Be 'Expelled' From Jobs

The Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) has called the actions of Department of Education "cynical" after figures showing thousands of job losses emerged on its website.

The figures showing teacher numbers for next year in the Irish Republic are even worse than had been predicted for schools already bracing themselves for lay-offs in September.

The TUI is now seeking urgent clarification over the teacher number figures on the Department of Education and Science website, which suggests there may be up to 3,500 teachers less in the system in second level in 2009/10 compared with 2008/09.

Jobs will be axed at the country's 731 secondary schools as the student-teacher ratio is raised.

Speaking today, TUI General Secretary Peter MacMenamin said: "TUI has sought this information at regular intervals since February only to be met with a stony silence by the Department. Now the information has been buried on their website in what can only be described as an utterly cynical exercise."

Mr McMenamin said added that the cutbacks would be devastating to the prospects of young people as they attempt to navigate a course through the education system.

"A well developed and appropriately resourced education system is key to any hope of economic revival for the nation. This massive reduction in teaching posts will set us back decades and is completely at odds with the stated intention to work towards a knowledge based economy," he added.

The provisional figures are based on staffing allocations to schools posted on the Department of Education's website.

The Department has disputed the TUI's interpretation of the figures.
