Pilot Rescued After Ditching Plane Off Wexford Coast
A lucky pilot has been rescued after his plane crashed into the sea off Co Wexford.
The light aircraft, which is believed to have been flown from England, went down shortly before 5pm yesterday.
The pilot was also believed to have been spotted standing on the wing of the submerged, but still floating, two-man plane by coincidence.
He was winched to safety by a rescue helicopter and is understood to be suffering from shock and hypothermia.
He was the only person on board the Avid Speedwing single-engine aircraft.
The Department of Transport said the alarm was raised by someone who saw the plane ditch into the sea near Tuskar Rock.
It is believed that the man was flying from west Haverford in England to Wellington Bridge in Wexford. The wreckage was secured by coastguard crews and towed in to Rosslare Harbour.
The Air Accident Investigation Unit said two inspectors were sent to the scene to examine the aircraft and determine the cause of the crash.
A spokesman said: "We don't have any idea yet why it crashed. The pilot's injuries are not life-threatening."
