Swine Flu School Closed

A Co Donegal Gaeltacht has been closed after a number of children were diagnosed with swine flu.

Coláiste Bhríde in Ranafast, is to close tomorrow and the remaining 275 students will be sent home.

Two students at the college tested positive for the swine flu virus on Monday, with over 30 further children with suspected symptoms sent home since.

Parents have been removing their children of their own accord from the Irish language college, where the course was due to run until 16 August.

The news comes as a woman in Dublin became the first person in Ireland to die as a result of contracting the H1N1 virus.

The woman - who died in Tallaght Hospital in south Dublin - suffered from an underlying medical condition that contributed to the fatal nature of the infection.

The HSE has noted that public concern over the virus has increased dramatically in recent weeks, with almost 4,000 people contacting a special information line since the start of the month.

The helpline (1800 941 100) received 3,941 cases between August 1st and lunchtime yesterday, compared with 6,353 for the month of July.

The freephone service has received 13,145 calls since it opened in May in response to public concern about the pandemic. It received 2,141 calls in that first month, but just 710 calls in June.
