Women's Boxing To Go Olympic
Fine Gael has welcomed news that boxing will now be included as an Olympic sport.
The party's Arts, Sports & Tourism Spokesperson, Olivia Mitchell, said the decision could lead to more medals for the state, considering that 12 of Ireland’s 23 Olympic medals are in boxing.
The decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to include women’s boxing in the 2012 Olympics was announced yesterday by the IOC president, Jacques Rogge.
Despite a history dating back to the 1720s, women's boxing has never been included in the full Olympic programme, despite a short demonstration bout in 1904.
Boxing authorities have praised the decision after concerns about competitiveness and health issues had been disproved.
TD Olivia Mitchell said: "We have a rich heritage of boxing champions in the Olympic Games and in Katie Taylor we have the world’s finest women's boxer.
"Today's decision is good news for women boxers all over the world who, for far too long, have been denied the opportunity to compete in the Games. Thankfully, that is no longer the case."
Katie Taylor could be set to become a household name during the Olymipcs. She has already won titles including the World Amateur Championship and has over 100 fights under her belt.
Ms Mitchell added: "Boxing is Ireland’s number one Olympic sport. We have won 23 medals in the Olympics and 12 of these have been in boxing.
"With world class sportspeople like Katie Taylor, I'm sure that record will be improved upon and I wish her, and all the Irish women’s boxers, the very best in their quest to get to London."
