Road Deaths Rise - Again

The weekend road toll has risen further after a teenager died in the latest car accident.

It happened early this morning at Newcastle West where gardaí are investigating the single vehicle fatal road traffic collision on the Listowel Road outside of Abbeyfeale, Co Limerick at approximately 4am this morning (Tuesday).

An 18-year-old male was fatally injured when the car he was driving lost control and collided with a wall.

He was taken to Tralee General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Gardaí wish to appeal for witnesses who may have travelled this stretch of road around the time of the collision to contact Newcastle West on 069-20650, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

Meanwhile, a woman injured in a road accident in Co Fermanagh on Sunday has now died in hospital.

Two men were also hurt in the crash on the Glengesh Road in Tempo in which just the one vehicle was involved.

The tragic news comes on top of an horrific accident when four men, all from the city of Aveiro in northern Portugal, were killed instantly just across the border in Newry.

A fifth man, also from Aveiro, who was in the car with them, is in a serious but stable condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.

It is understood the men were all living and working in Dublin. They were employed by a Portuguese company which is carrying out work at Dublin Airport's new terminal building.

Meanwhile, the motorcyclist injured in a collision with a van in Co Tyrone on Saturday has also died.

He was named last night as Robert Hutchinson, 48, a mechanic from Tullyhogue, outside Cookstown.

This means that 79 people have died on the North's roads so far this year compared to 73 for the same period last year.
