'The Greatest' Visits Irish Roots
Thousands are expected to take to the streets today as one of the world's most iconic sports personalities pays a visit to his Co Clare roots.
Known as 'The Greatest', boxing legend Muhammad Ali will be attending a ceremony in Ennis, Co Clare, where he will be the first person awarded the title Honorary Freeman of the town.
Ennis Town Council will be hosting a Civic Reception for the three-time world champion at 3pm.
Ali is expected to then take a drive through the town where he will visit the birthplace of his great grandfather, Abe Grady.
Ennis Council have endeavoured to go the distance with entertainment for members of the public, who will be able to avail of a big screen to view the Civic Reception in Ennis town centre, while enjoying live music and entertainment from artists such as Sharon Shannon, Mundy and the Kilfenora Ceili Band.
This evening, Mr Ali will also visit Dromoland Castle, where general manager Mark Nolan will host a fundraising initiative for the Alltech-Muhammad Ali Center Global Education and Charitable Fund, which was created to help establish community-based humanitarian and educational programmes.
Mayor of Ennis, Councillor Frankie Neylon, said: "Ennis Town Council has decided to make Ali an Honorary Freeman in recognition of his direct links with Ennis and the county of Clare, his unrivalled sporting achievements on the world stage, and his contribution to educational and charitable causes through his global fundraising foundation.
"The public and media interest that has been generated by this planned visit has been immense and I believe that the publicity surrounding it will result in thousands of additional visitors to the town."
Mayor Neylon added that he had no doubt the people of Clare would turn out in huge numbers to welcome Muhammad Ali and that the boxer himself would enjoy his visit.
