Second Home Payment Deadline Approaches
The levy for owners of second homes is due at the end of this month according to the Government's Revenue Department.
The charge, which was announced in the Budget in October of last year, means owners of second homes and investment properties have until the end of the month to pay the new €200 tax.
Those who fail to make their payment face a penalty of €20 for every month they fall into arrears.
The annual tax is payable to the local authority where the property is located and there is a €20 penalty for every month that it is not paid.
The Private Residential Tenancies Board and ESB will also share information with local authorities enabling them to identify homes liable for the tax.
The new tax applies to homes, which are not the full-time residence of the owner.
It does not apply to 'granny flats' or mobile homes, however, it does cover rental properties, second homes and holiday homes in the Republic.
No letters asking for the payment will be sent, as second home owners will be expected to make the payments themselves. More details can be found at www.nppr.ie.
