Arrests Follow Fresh Belfast Riots
Police in the North made three arrests in east Belfast last night, following a second evening of riots.
One officer was injured by crowds hurling missiles close to the Albertbridge Road and Mountpottinger interface.
According to police, the trouble was calmed sometime after 2.30am, and three people were held for riotous behaviour, possession of a petrol bomb and disorderly behaviour.
Last night's incident follows similar scenes on Monday, when up to 200 rioters took to the streets following a Sinn Féin organised march to mark the closure of Mountpottinger PSNI station.
Officers fired baton rounds in an attempt to disperse the crowds, which were also monitored by air.
Loyalist and nationalist youths clashed at the contentious interface, which forced the closure of roads in the area.
Area Commander Chief Inspector John McKeagh of the PSNI condemned last night's repeat of the violence.
"Although the disturbances were on a much less scale that the night before, this behaviour is still totally unacceptable," he said.
"Local residents deserve to live in peace and I can assure the community that we are continuing to work to bring those responsible before the courts at the earliest opportunity."
Chief Inspector McKeagh said a dedicated team of officers has been set up to achieve this and added that he was confident further arrests would be made over the next few days: "I would also urge local community and elected representatives to assist police in their efforts to dissuade this unacceptable behaviour."

Commissioner Acknowledges Crime Increase
The latest crime figures released by the Central Statistics Office shows many crimes are continuing to increase, and has prompted an appeal from the Garda Commissioner. Crimes such as robbery, extortion and hijacking rose from 572 last year by over 100 to 659 this year. Meanwhile, burglaries have gone up by over 1,000.

Two Prison Officers Injured In Attack
Two prison officers have been injured in an unprovoked attack by an inmate at Mountjoy Prison, the Irish Prison Service has confirmed. The attack took place at approximately 8:30am on Thursday morning. The inmate, currently serving a four-year term for aggravated burglary, used an improvised weapon in the attack.

Gardaí Launch Road Safety Campaign
A nationwide road safety campaigned was launched by Gardaí over the weekend with "high-visibility checkpoints" set up across the State. To date this year some 154 people have died on the country's roads, an increase of 14 on this time last year. At locations across all gardaí districts, officers established checkpoints during one-hour timeslots.

Nurses at a Galway hospital have launched industrial action as part of a dispute over the treatment of two managers. The Irish Nurses Organisation have petitioned its members to take the action following the disciplining of two long-serving senior nurse managers at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.
