120,000 Customers Double-Charged By BOI
It has emerged 120,000 Bank of Ireland customers have been double charged when using their Laser card over the weekend.
According to reports this morning, some Laser card holders who used their cards since last Friday were double charged for the same purchase, possibly repeatedly over a number of days.
The bank released a statement this morning saying the duplications had occurred in transactions on Friday that were duplicated overnight on Monday, resulting in some accounts being charged twice for the same transaction.
"The error has now been rectified on customer accounts and most customers will have experienced no adverse impact," the bank said, and it apologised to customers.
However, Bank of Ireland officials are yet to clarify whether the problem also affected transactions made after Friday.
The payments of direct debits and cheques were not affected, but standing order payments may have been delayed by one day.
Confirmation on the amount of money involved is yet to surface, but it is believed customers could have been indebted by millions of euro.
A Bank of Ireland spokeswoman said all refunds had been made including all overdraft fees and penalties charged to customers as a result of the incorrect charges to their card.
Customers who are concerned should contact Bank of Ireland's Banking 365 on 1890 365 365 or contact their local branch.
